At least 2 dead in Georgia high school shooting, suspect in custody

At least two people were killed and four others injured in a shooting at Apalachee High School in Georgia on Wednesday morning, NBC News reported, citing initial information from law enforcement officials.

A suspect has been taken into custody, the Barrow County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement to NBC News. The condition of that suspect wasn’t immediately clear. Officials have not commented on a potential motive nor have they publicly identified those killed or injured in the attack.

Law enforcement officers and emergency services personnel responded to reports of an active shooting at around 10:23 a.m., the Barrow County Sheriff’s Office said. About 1,800 students attend Apalachee High School, which is located in Barrow County, about 50 miles northeast of Atlanta. The school has been in session since Aug. 1, according to its student calendar.

Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp said on X that he has directed state resources to respond to the shooting. “We will continue to work with local, state, and federal partners as we gather information and further respond to this situation,” he added.

All Barrow County schools are currently under a “soft” lockdown, during which students cannot be released, NBC News reported.

Attorney General Merrick Garland addressed the Georgia shooting on Wednesday during a scheduled press conference on Russian election interference, noting that the FBI and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives are on the scene and working with state and local law enforcement officials.

“I’m devastated for the families who have been affected by this terrible tragedy,” Garland said.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates.
